We’ve had some surrogates and intended parents ask us what surrogacy will look like after the outcome of our last election. And to be 100% honest, we don’t know for sure.
What we do know is that in times of political and societal uncertainty, it’s natural to feel hesitant about making major life decisions. Some people might be questioning whether building a family is something they still want to pursue, and some women might be unsure about carrying a child for someone else while the future of reproductive rights feels unclear.
While we wish we had a crystal ball to see what’s ahead, we can only base our thoughts on what we’re seeing now. And despite the uncertainty, we still have hope for surrogacy’s future. Here are three reasons we remain optimistic while staying mindful of the challenges ahead.
Laws and Policies Don’t Change Overnight
Our country operates on a system of checks and balances, which means new laws and significant policy changes take time to be enacted. In most cases, these changes require collaboration between Congress, the courts, and the President. So, while political promises and campaign rhetoric can cause concern, the actual process of enacting new laws is often slow.
Additionally, individual states have significant authority to create and enforce their own laws around issues like reproductive rights, IVF, and parentage. While we can’t predict how every state will act, we find reassurance in the fact that some states are actively working to protect reproductive rights. For example, during the last election, voters in several states passed ballot measures enhancing access to reproductive healthcare. These wins are worth celebrating and suggest there will likely always be safe states for our community.
That said, it’s important to stay informed. The political landscape can change, and we are committed to closely monitoring any shifts that could impact surrogacy or reproductive rights. If we ever believe it’s unsafe for someone to pursue surrogacy, we will not hesitate to share that with our community. Protecting everyone involved is a top priority for us.
Our Community of Fighters
If reproductive rights or surrogacy laws are ever threatened, we are confident that our community will step up. The surrogacy, IVF, LGBTQIA+, and reproductive rights communities are made up of passionate, determined individuals who have proven time and again that they will not back down when their rights are at risk.
These communities have successfully advocated for positive change in the past, and we believe they will continue to do so. Whether it’s through public opinion, media campaigns, or lobbying efforts, there is strength in numbers.
We, too, are committed to raising our voices and taking action if necessary. Legal professionals, medical providers, and advocacy groups are actively monitoring political and legal developments, and we are prepared to work alongside them to support our surrogates and intended parents. You are not alone in this journey, and we will always do our part to ensure you have access to the resources and support you need.
The Good Surrogacy Brings to Society
One of the reasons we are so passionate about surrogacy is the incredible good it brings to everyone involved. In uncertain times, creating or contributing to something bigger than ourselves can be incredibly fulfilling. Surrogacy is a way to bring joy, compassion, and love into the world—qualities that will always matter, no matter the political climate.
If you’re considering becoming a surrogate, think about the impact you could have on someone’s life. You could help create a family that has dreamed of a child for years. If you’re an intended parent, your desire to build a family is valid and important. No political force can diminish the love within a family or take away the joy that comes from creating one.
We also understand that it’s natural to feel apprehensive about the future. Deciding to pursue surrogacy—whether as a surrogate or an intended parent—is a deeply personal choice, and it’s okay to take time to weigh your options. At Surrogacy Is, we’re here to provide you with information, connect you with experts, and guide you through the process so you can make the decision that feels right for you.
Looking Ahead
No matter what the future holds, our commitment to our community remains the same. We are actively monitoring political and legal developments, partnering with experts, and focusing on ensuring safe and successful surrogacy journeys.
While we can’t control everything that happens in the world, we believe in the power of love, family, and equality. These values are always worth fighting for, and we promise to stand with you every step of the way.
